I was honored to get an advanced copy of “Saint Mick.” (Full disclosure: I am friends with Mick.)
Saint Mick is a good read—full of experiences and insights—of one amazing man’s journey to his Christmas Heart. I enjoyed it. For my Santa friends, this book treats our craft very honorably, and it is a journey and an interesting one. He does name-drop a lot of the folks in our Community. I’ll be honest—being a geek and knowing nothing much about WWE (Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment, aka Pro-Wrestling—I did not know much about that world. When I joined the Santa Community, I heard about Mick (WWE Hall of Famer, aka Mankind, Cactus Jack, and Buddy Love) and his role as a Christmas Ambassador, someone who loved Christmas and eventually donned the Red Suit and became a full Real-Bearded Santa (RBS).
To my surprise, a few years back, we ended up chatting, and I found him to be a very thoughtful, funny, and empathetic person. More surprising is that he’s still a sharp guy, despite being battered beyond belief and being dropped on his head more than a few times. 😉
As a writer, his style is much like having one of those rare long talks with a good friend, long into the night—one who is witty, self deprecating, and who has had a remarkable adventure. While I did not get some of the wrestling references, this book is really about his journey as person who truly loves Christmas. He writes very openly about the triumphs, mistakes, and challenges he has faced. What surprised me most was the amount of different kinds of challenges he rose to, everything from serious physical trauma, living and dying on stage, working on a crisis help-line, the challenges of having an autistic child, and much more. There are some real insights, as well as some heartfelt moments, and some laugh out loud ones. And through it all, we see his love and development of his Santa Claus personae and his belief in the ideals of Christmas.
As a Christmas Performing Instructor, I heartily recommend reading it, and having a copy on your shelf, to lend to new Santa’s who want to get an idea of what an adventure in our art, can be. -Santa True, Christmas Performer Workshops.
